Epic Records is a record label owned by Sony Music Entertainment and headquartered in Los Angeles.
Epic was founded in 1953 by the Columbia Records division of CBS. Epic began with a specialism for marketing jazz, pop, and classical music, but later branched out into pop, hip-hop, R&B and other genres.
Artists whose recordings appear in Epic’s catalog include Michael Jackson, Wham! and George Michael, Ozzy Osbourne, Pearl Jam, Sade, Luther Vandross, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rage Against the Machine, and Oasis.
More recently, Epic has signed artists including TLC, Toni Braxton, Outkast, Future, Yo Gotti, Meghan Trainor, DJ Khaled, 21 Savage, and Travis Scott.
L.A Reid ran Epic Records as CEO from 2011 to 2017.
Following Reid’s departure, Sylvia Rhone took leadership of the label as President – a position she had held since 2014.
In April 2019, Sony announced that Rhone had been promoted to Chairman & CEO of Epic Records.
Rhone commented at the time: “I am excited to continue my amazing journey at Epic Records supported by Rob Stringer’s vision and leadership.
“Everything we do is a testament to our incredible artists who set the bar of the entire Epic culture, inspiring our dedicated executive team every day and enriching the legacy of this great label.”Music Business Worldwide
