From Snoop Dogg and Death Row’s TikTok exclusive to Hipgnosis’ investment in Timbaland’s Beatclub… it’s MBW’s Weekly Round-Up

Welcome to Music Business Worldwide’s weekly round-up – where we make sure you caught the five biggest stories to hit our headlines over the past seven days. MBW’s round-up is supported by Centtrip, which helps over 500 of the world’s best-selling artists maximise their income and reduce their touring costs.

TikTok announced this week that it had struck a deal with Snoop Dogg for a major streaming exclusive.

Snoop Dogg is bringing the Death Row Records catalog – which he acquired last year – back to music streaming services, but it has appeared on TikTok first this week via a windowed first-week exclusive.

The Death Row Records catalog has arrived on TikTok via its independent distribution platform, SoundOn, which launched in early 2022.

According to TikTok, its partnership with Death Row marks “the first-ever catalog reissue to release exclusively through SoundOn”.

Also this week, Hipgnosis Song Management entered into a partnership with Beatclub, the beat marketplace founded by Timbaland and Gary Marella.

Under the new partnership, which also includes an investment from Hipgnosis, Beatclub’s roster of ‘elite’ producers and artists will have the ability to sample songs within the Hipgnosis catalog.

Amongst those artists and producers are Justin Timberlake, Tainy, J. Cole, Mike Dean, Mike WiLL Made-It, Tommy Brown, Timbaland, Angel Lopez, Cash Money AP, BoogzDaBeast, Jozzy, Federico Vindver and more.

Elsewhere, Influence Media Partners invested in a catalog of titles created by Harry Styles collaborator Tyler Johnson between 2012 and 2020 (Johnson’s work on Styles’ latest release, 2022’s Harry’s House, is not included in this deal).

Plus, SoundCloud entered into a JV with Jax Jones’ and Dan Stacey’s UK-based label, WUGD, while Susan Wojcicki announced that she’s stepping down as CEO of YouTube.
