Pan-European licensing hub ICE launches new self-service ‘Licensr’ tool

Pan-European licensing hub ICE has launched a new online self-service tool called Licensr that enables smaller online music services to get multi-territory coverage for use of the ICE Core repertoire “in a matter of minutes”.

Licensr allows users to select, pay for, and receive confirmation of a licence covering ICE Core repertoire (the ‘ICE Direct Licence’) in a quick and easy process that requires no prior knowledge of music licensing.

ICE was created by the UK’s PRS, Sweden’s STIM and Germany’s GEMA and represents over 290,000 rightsholders alone through this partnership.

In addition, the ICE Core includes repertoire of Ireland’s IMRO and the independent publishers Peermusic, Downtown/Songtrust and Concord.

For creators whose rights are included within the ICE Core repertoire, ICE states that Licensr will help to ensure their rights are being represented when their work is being used on new services.

Licensr additionally supports non-broadcaster services moving online in the current climate, such as on-demand streaming fitness classes or other live video services to get their mechanical & performing rights for ICE Core repertoire.

ICE cites exit.live – a new platform for self-publishing digital audio recordings of live concerts to fans – as the first company to use Licensr to secure mechanical and performing rights.

“ICE are always working to maximise the return for rightsholders in our Core licence, and our Licensr innovation does this by helping simplify and streamline the process for smaller services to easily become licensed and pay royalties.

Pascal De Mul, CEO at exit.live, said: “To be able to license so many territories, with such a strong repertoire as the ICE Core, in moments is brilliant.

“From my previous experience,  I know exactly how many different deals and how much work was previously involved. Now as a nimble start-up, quickly navigating the key part of the required rights frees us up.

“We get to spend more time concentrating on delivering an authentic experience as the home of live music and recruiting artists to an additional income stream for them.”

Ben McEwen (pictured), VP Commercial at ICE added: “ICE are always working to maximise the return for rightsholders in our Core licence, and our Licensr innovation does this by helping simplify and streamline the process for smaller services to easily become licensed and pay royalties.

“Supporting them directly supports creators with incremental royalty streams at a time when every opportunity counts.”
