David Wolter has left his role as Senior VP of A&R at Sony‘s RCA Records to join Universal‘s Capitol Music Group – where he’ll head up a reborn Virgin Records as EVP.
In his new role, Wolter will report into CMG President Ashley Newton. He will sign and develop artists for Virgin, as well as oversee recording projects for new and established artists.
Wolter (pictured) will be based in Hollywood in CMG’s iconic Capitol Tower.

Wolter comes to Capitol after nine years at RCA Records.
Having been brought to the Sony label in 2007 by Newton, Wolter worked closely with artists that included Walk The Moon, Elle King, Bleachers, The Strokes, Cage The Elephant and Ray LaMontagne.
Prior to joining RCA, Wolter was Vice President of A&R for Virgin Records, having also been recruited to that label by Newton, in 1997.
There he worked with artists including Gorillaz, Katy Perry, 30 Seconds To Mars, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and many others.
Wolter began his career at Mercury Records in 1993, followed by a stint at Hollywood Records as in 1996.
He is the first exec to head Virgin Records in the US since Ron Fair, who left CMG in 2014.Music Business Worldwide
